چکیده

Algebraic iterative methods are routinely used for solving the ill-posed sparse linear systems arising in tomographic image reconstruction. Here we consider the Algebraic Reconstruction Techniques (ART) and the Simultaneous Iterative Reconstruction Techniques (SIRT), both of which rely on semi-convergence. Block versions of these methods, based on a partitioning of the linear system, are able to combine the fast semi-convergence of ART with the better multi-core properties of SIRT. These block methods separate into two classes: those that, in each iteration, access the blocks in a sequential manner, and those that compute a result for each block in parallel and then combine these results before the next iteration. The goal of this work is to demonstrate which block methods are best suited for implementation on modern multi-core computers. To compare the performance of the different block methods we use a fixed relaxation parameter in each method, namely, the one that leads to the fastest semi-convergence. Computational results show that for multi-core computers, the sequential approach is preferable.

Parallel performance study of block-preconditioned iterative methods on multicore computer systems

In this work we benchmark the performance of a preconditioned iterative method, used in large scale computer simulations of a geophysical application, namely, the elastic Glacial Isostatic Adjustment model. The model is discretized using the nite element method. It gives raise to algebraic systems of equations with matrices that are large, sparse, nonsymmetric, inde nite and with a saddle point...

Block-iterative algorithms

The recently presented sequential unconstrained minimization algorithm SUMMA is extended to provide a framework for the derivation of block-iterative, or partial-gradient, optimization methods. This BI-SUMMA includes, and is motivated by, block-iterative versions of the algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) and its multiplicative variant, the MART. The BI-SUMMA approach is designed to provid...

Fast System Matrix Calculation in CT Iterative Reconstruction

Introduction: Iterative reconstruction techniques provide better image quality and have the potential for reconstructions with lower imaging dose than classical methods in computed tomography (CT). However, the computational speed is major concern for these iterative techniques. The system matrix calculation during the forward- and back projection is one of the most time- cons...

Comparison of Algebraic Reconstruction Methods in Computed Tomography

Advances in computed tomography and availability of high performance computing in the last decade have shown importance of iterative reconstruction in combination with statistical methods. An attempt is made to compare two existing iterative methods used for reconstruction namely ART and SART. The results show that ART is a highly computational intensive and time taking process compared to SART...

On the efficiency of iterative ordered subset reconstruction algorithms for acceleration on GPUs

Expectation Maximization (EM) and the Simultaneous Iterative Reconstruction Technique (SIRT) are two iterative computed tomography reconstruction algorithms often used when the data contain a high amount of statistical noise, have been acquired from a limited angular range, or have a limited number of views. A popular mechanism to increase the rate of convergence of these types of algorithms ha...
